View Full Version : How to use parking sensor feature

Two questions about the ALPs.
When defense mode is activated/loaded, is there any way to temporarily change to parking sensors? If I turn the system off and on, can I actually use the parking sensor function during the 1st minute before it changes to defense mode?
I'm curious 1) to see if I can actually use these sensors as a guide or parking and 2) how I could realistically change to parking sensor mode if I did get stopped by a LEO.

The ALP is really a full fledged parking sensor system and parking sensors work 100% of the time.
To go from Defense to Parking only there are many different methods:
1. Use different USB Sticks with different settings files on them.
2. Use the GPS antenna and when travelling below a set speed the system will automatically become parking only
3. Set USB Security Key and once you remove the key from the USB Port the system will immediately go into parking mode
4. Wait for the next firmware update and press the menu key one short press to toggle between defense and parking.

I thought you guys would like that...

We have lots of other customer requests getting filled in the next update but you guys will have to hang on a little longer.

Any chance to toggle between defense and detection mode in that next update?

Hi bairice, while we are waiting for the feature that Tom/BRD describes in his post, and in addition to the option of reconfiguring your system from Parking & L. Interference Defense (PDC & LID), to a parking sensor only mode (when desired due to an "interview" by a LEO) by inserting a USB Flash Drive loaded with the Parking Detection Only mode (PDC) into the system's USB port, please remember that while the system is in the PDC & DLI mode, or in the PDC & LID mode, the parking sensors are ALWAYS active, and provide parking (distance) assistance. I verified this on my car, this past week, by walking in front of, and behind, my car, with the PDC & LID mode active. When I did, the LED light blinked red , the Control Box light came on steady red, and there was a beeping tone that increased the closer I came to each sensor. Hope this helps.

Why would you need this? Another new feature coming would be a choice of parking mode or detection mode after the LID setting runs out. So after your LID timer of 4 seconds or so expires you can now go into detection mode automatically for 60 seconds until it returns back to defense mode.

Should work now.

My redlines detection is not capable enough.

He already owns a personal ALP... There is no escaping this guy. Keep your hand on the button when travelling through his patrolled area. He follows everything posted here.

Interesting. So when I'm stopped behind a car and get up close, I would expect the sensors to go off? That definitely hasn't been happening. I will try walking around or using a piece of paper and see if the sensors react.

On the "SETUP Your AL Priority Control Box" selection menu/form, in the second item "Parking Detection (PDC) Range Control", you have the ability to select from 1 thru 8, as well as Disable. I have my sensors set to "3" and when I walk approximately 2 to 3 feet from a sensor, the system alerts. I do not know the distance from the sensors if you select 8. I think I remember reading that someone had set their PDC Range to possibly 8, and when he stopped close to a car in front of him in traffic, the sensors would alert. You can prevent this by selecting a lower number to suit your individual requirements. You will just have to experiment with the PDC Range in order to obtain the desired distance for an alert that you may want, maybe in a garage, but not have the system alert when you are in traffic and stopped behind a car.

Mine are set on 3. First beeps are ~ 16 18 inches away and become *frantic* when front plate assembly is about 3 inches. Actually a pretty damn good parking sensor.

What do you do when you have bluetooth and use your phone? thanks!

This is b/c you're not actually measuring distance, but rather the relative signal "strength" of the returned IR reflection from an object ahead.
Case in point:
My setting is the same as curmudgeon's. Sometimes the proximity warning beeps are the same as his or even 3-4 ft, but when the object is highly reflective it will give warning beeps at 8-10 ft.

Also the case with mine...theyre set at the default 3 or whatever it is...Sometimes Ill get 12 inches warning in a parkade or sometimes Im behind a vehicle and it gives 6 ft warning.

Yeah... Chrome on the rear will add distance to the parking sensor alerts.

Thanks for posting this. I just replaced my LI's with ALP and have the parking setting at 1. Most times it would start alerting at about 8 inches but other times it would alert at 5-6 feet. I thought something was wrong with the unit or my settings. Thanks for clearing this up.

Yea assuming my hardware is all good, the parking sensor is essentially useless. It's not even moderately consistent. It's not a huge deal, but if I wanted to demonstrate to a LEO that they're parking sensors, I seriously don't think I'd be able to convince them.
