Based on the specs from apple the iPhone 4 Specs show that it only supports Bluetooth 2.1
Specifications on the 4S shows its Bluetooth 4.0
If you have the original 4 it would not be compatible and you can return it for a full refund and purchase it again when you eventually upgrade your phone.
