Lol they got the facts about flir wrong lol...
It will not ID a tat 2?5km away. The day vision camera can. I doubt it will be for speed enforcement.
It will call in ground units to cars that look like they are speeding and manage car chases.
Channel 7 is going to be mad that they won't be called on for car chases anymore.

But what I don't understand is why the Sunshine coast is being left out...

Here is the stuff that California Highway Patrol use. They can point-shoot and get your speed. Some expensive ranging camera. If you look at the circled values in the photo, you see the Aircraft stats and Target stats (Lat-Long-Elevation).
The fact that it knows the lat/long/altitude in real time means it can just as quickly acquire a speed using the onboard GPS for the plane, and do a simple delta to the target for speed. I have heard them on the radio reading out a cars speed as in "now he is at 93, he just slowed to 88". It is illegal in California to use ground referenced markings as some other states do, so they don't use any timing or anything - clearly that could not be done in real time as a car speeds or slows. So they got around this by buying some military grade ranging camera. Watch the youtube video of this in action as they chase some guy who was racing. They don't care about his speed in this case, the fact he is racing trumps a speeding ticket so it is a reckless driving citation waiting for him.

If you watch the elevation of the crosshairs, shown near center bottom, you can see how it swings in values as he gets sloppy with the crosshairs, and it shows elevation of areas off the freeway. Since he is not specifically placing the crosshairs on the car, he is not getting the car's actual speed, as at this point it is about reckless and racing and not speed. But the lat-long-elevation reading of where he places the crosshair target tells the story of how they can get speed in real time.

I noticed that. I had a link to the specs for the camera a year or so ago - I'll see if I can dig it up.
