A friend introduced me to this forum since I'm looking to get an ALP install on a 991 Porsche Carrera 4S. Any recommendations on installers in the bay area or the number of heads for front/rear protection would be great!

Welcome. Just hope u can camouflage your heads. I am sure you have read the CA VC section 28150. The way the law is written, it gets ugly if you get caught with 4 heads. Of course it is ugly for a moving violation in CA ( Starting @ $750 depending on where is CA) Good Luck

It's not 4 heads, it's 4 jammer units. The law was written to distinguish between a user of a jammer (equipment violation, infraction, $99 fine) and someone selling them (misdemeanor). If you're arguing that every head is a "device", then you could argue that every diode within the head is a separate "device" as well.

Welcome from the NorthEast. And yes, what awj223 said. I thought the same thing when I first saw the statute, but found out otherwise

I wouldn't worry about the Ca law. It is basically a fixit ticket.
You have limited mounting options on the rear, basically the only place is above the rear license plate.
On the front I recommend mounting on the grill of the two side radiators and one head on the top center of the central radiatior.

Well, I did not read that interpretation in the law, a good friend that I used to ride with the is / was (Retired) a CA High Way Patrol told me that they were instructed that 4 heads were a misdemeanor and could lead to arrest depending on attitude. I guess is would be up to the judge.:disgust:

The LEO could charge you with anything he/she doesn't like your attitude. Whether the charge sticks is another matter. If you have an attitude, the LEO could walk around your car and look for every burned out light, check your tire tread, etc., and give you fix-it tickets for all of them. The LEO could issue a fix-it ticket for not running a front plate, even though CHP doesn't care about that for the most part.
I'm pretty sure a judge would reduce the charge to an infraction though. A head cannot, on its own, jam LIDAR, and so should not be considered a "device".

For the front of the car, I'm thinking about mounting it in the areas marked red in the attached image. For the back of the car, I'm planning on just mounting it on the rear license plate.
2 heads for the front, 1 head in the back

You need 2 heads on each end of the car you want to protect. Red is the right height but the heads are too far apart. Bring both heads closer as far to the center as you can get in the same slot.
For the hear, One head on the top of each end of the license plate area.

If doing only 2 front heads, I'd go as far in as possible. Ideally you want about 18-20" between the heads. Are you sure you only want to do 1 rear head? You won't get protection against the newer variable pulse rate (VPR) guns with only one head. VPR is not yet a problem in CA, but when they do start showing up, you'd need 2 rear heads.

Not sure where in the bay area you're located, but Lott's Auto Stereo in Santa Cruz knows how to install jammers. They sell LI's but will install anything you bring in.

You won't need rear jammers in CA. CHP and locals are going to be frontal shots.

I met up with a lawyer who actually looked up for case law on this, and no one he could find in the database has ever been charged with the 4-device thing. He said the law is ambiguous, and would need to be challenged in court, but so far no one has been charged with it. That said, you do not need rear jammers in CA.

Thanks all. I'll check out Lott's in Santa Cruz, also thinking about Premier in Fremont.
Any suggestions on which set of jammers to get? I'm leaning towards the ALP jammers.

No logic in purchasing anything (new) other than ALP's at this point in time.

Get the ALPs. They're the only jammer out there that can jam everything.
Be prepared for price shock if you go with Premier. I got a quote from them for installing my jammers and it was about 10 times what my installer actually charged. This was mostly because they'll fabricate custom mounting brackets and stuff like that, which I don't think is necessary. My installer did install the AL control set on the instrument panel bezel and put the LED into the instrument panel, whereas Premier would probably custom design an entire panel in your car for both. For rear jammers, they'd probably find a way to put them into the license plate frame (and custom design a frame for you specifically for the jammers you're using). Of course that means cutting your bumper, and if you ever upgrade jammers in 5-10 years, the old holes in your bumper may not align with the new jammer heads...
Whether it's worth what they charge, well, that's a personal decision.

I'd go with ALPs as they are updated frequently, and also have a hardware advantage with more sensors per head, etc. You'll pay a bit more, but worth it in the long run. I'm not familiar with Premier in Fremont. Not all installers are the same. Just make sure they place the heads where you tell them to (with help from everyone here) and make sure they are level/square on all axis. Also, chime back here after the install with photos, etc. Send me a PM if you want to get tested.

Very good advice. My installer put the heads level and square the first time, but then when I asked them to move the heads out a bit, they installed them toe out. I then had to tell them to realign them so that they were level and square. Clearly the second person who worked on my car they didn't know what he was doing. Some of their people seem to be experienced with jammer installs and some of them do not.

I can't seem to PM you yet, I'm still restricted to a lot of areas on radarandlaserforum. Do you know of people in the Bay Area with lidar guns who would be able to help test my setup?

It should be in your settings... was not aware of restrictions in PMs other than self-imposed ones... check your forum settings, should be in there.

To prevent this forum from all the fake accounts that get created to spam users and the forum we have to restrict PM's from new members until we feel safe knowing that a new member did not create an account here only to spam the forum and its members. I have lifted the restriction on your account.
Your card to play in Ca is using Irt , it wont cut in effiency.
With proper Jtk you can go for years to come without leos getting suspicious.
There is nothing better than to do your install your-self , you learn and can get
exactely what you need ...and it is free...it is not so complicated.
