View Full Version : Some (Formerly) Hi-Res Photos of ALP

Just some photos I took with an ancient DSLR when opening the ALP today.

The tiny size of the heads was just amazing. I used an old IPhone 3G and the camera lens cap for scale.

These used to all be massive and fairly Hi-Res, but the forum (understandably) lowers the quality a bit.

Nice looking system! those cables dont look near long enough to make it from the grill to inside the car? is there another part of the cable from the CPU side that hooks up to them?

Yes, they're similar in cable design to the LI 8.9 'quick disconnect' heads with the DIN socket about 1m from the head

Nice seeing some old guard still milling about.

(I'll just derail my own thread for a moment - Instead of starting a new one)

For those wondering:
I was (obviously) on the "original" forum from 2005~2010. In 2010 I went to a different University and things were changing in the hobby, with many people going to (what is know around here as) "the other forum." I went over to that forum, but had lost a lot of the interest I had in the hobby. More importantly, however, at the new Uni it was simply not feasible (nor a priority) to devote much time to the hobby. So from 2010-2012 I posted relatively little; late 2012 I just left the hobby outright.

After all, I had a full setup that served me well, and the hobby simply wasn't enjoyable anymore. Things had changed a lot since '05, much to my dismay. Furthermore, I stopped doing long 170+mile monthly trips.

Fast Forward to now:

I got a different auto, and many of my countermeasures from 2005~2010 were starting to show their age, so transferring them didn't seem a prudent investment.

So, I logged back on the other forum, and researched. Much to my surprise, there had been a maelstrom of changes regarding available tech. I also found this forum, so I have been splitting my time the past few weeks researching.

I am glad that I missed out on the past couple years. Though much has changed tech-wise since ~2012, very little from the interpersonal aspect has. To wit, excessive drama, pointless quibbles, and an unabated "fanboy" mentality. It was sad to go back and catch up on 2 years of that.

Disheartening to say the least, to this end, I plan on bridging my time between the forums. I do not wish to become obsequious in any capacity to any one entity. Compound that with time demands, I won't be on -as much- as in years past.

In the most succinct form: I simply refuse to become caught up in displeasing side of the hobby. I want to enjoy the hobby, not defend it.

This post and it's contents are not directed at any one person(s), group(s), or forum(s). I'm (back) in the hobby to learn, to help others learn, and to enjoy it. I remember a lot of great people from this hobby, glad to see many are still around, regardless of "where they are."

Hey Airmoore, I feel the same way. I want to enjoy the hobby, not get caught up in the drama. Thus I also split my time across both forums.

And congrats on the new ALP! I may upgrade next year, but for now my LIs (which I just spent an entire weekend installing in my new car) will have to do.

Thanks, I'm pretty excited. My first new tech in the hobby for many years.

From my research the past few weeks... ALP just seems to be the way to go right now. Especially for an All-In-One unit (radar antenna integration is crucial for me) and future-proofing, thats why I went with it. I'll build up the system slowly.

You are going to love the heads on this thing, if you haven't seen them yet in person. The amount of options they open up for mounting is not something to be overlooked.

Congrats on your purchase, AirMoore! Was gonna say it's time to ditch the dual M-27's! ;) Hoping to join the ALP club this weekend!

Hey..That looks just like mine! I too was surprised at how small the heads and controller were, even the cpu is quite small. An awesome unit with lots of extras for the install. I will put up my install pics this weekend after I wash the car, it is filthy with the crappy weather we have had.

I hope you're seated... they were... dual M25's, J15/J16. Getting the ALP after those is akin to going from a Geo metro to Tesla S it feels like.
In their defense though, they never let me down once, and had numerous respectable saves.

Hah, I had the M25 J16s for a LONNNNG time :) Finally upgraded to HP 905's before I heard about ALPs and it was like a whole new world for me (the 905 heads are about the same as ALP)
