Okay after some testing I can update with the following info:

Checked the CPU and its USB cable: no problem visible. Tried direct plugging with a new usb stick (same kingston as the original delivered one) and still get the same behaviour. So I think we can rule out a bad usb stick as well as a bad usb cable.

Additionally, when realising that I am not in defense mode (just green instead of blue) its ok to just powercycle the device (directly via a switch on the power cables) and voila: blue again. That also works when the car is standing still - so I dont think that any component suffers of a broken cable or so.

Any hints are really highly appreciated

If you are using GPS with speed limit settings it will not go into defense mode until after you exceed your speed settings.

Before looking at an Escort Radar Detector you should really check out Uniden Detectors.. Uniden R1 & R3 are the best performing radar detectors for the money.

Thanks for the info - yes, I am aware of that!

So far I tend to think that its the last 2 or 3 firmware updates that broke my ALP here. To rule that out I would like to revert to a lower firmware - is that possible without problems?
If the problem still exists with - lets say 5.2.1 then its not a software problem... if its fixed then I got a smoking gun...

So - same procedure as with an upgrade, resetting afterwards and ideally using an old config file... right?
