There will probably be more guns available then time that will be available to use all of them depending on how many members come. I really hope we can get a variety of systems LI's, K40's LSP's, ALP's, Etc. to make it interesting.

You know what I believe would be very useful?

Instead of recording close range punch through distances only, use a format of attempting to clock from long range to close range all of the way after each successful reading, repeated re-attempts though the entire range.

In my experiences with either active, passive, or both, PTs can happen at specific times at a variety of distances not just close range.

I would enjoy seeing a test done that way, some day. A lot of useful data could come out of such a test.

VGGreat idea! but the problem with this would be weather conditions.Temperature, humidity, sunlight and operator error come into play possible.

CJR238

Well if you can't get a PT at close Range you certainly aren't going to get it at greater distances. But that's just my experience.

Yellowcab
08-31-2014, 07:22 PM
Well if you can't get a PT at close Range you certainly aren't going to get it at greater distances. But that's just my experience.

Although that is most of our experience it isn't necessarily true. Most of the testing that has been done, has been on relatively short courses (under 2000 feet). At these distances punch throughs have occurred primarily due to the shooter being outside of the jammer beam or due to the jammer not seeing the LIDAR. Other punch throughs have been due to poor algorithms of various firmwares on various jammers.

As demonstrated by previous RALETC testing performed by RedRocket, some jammer manufacturers use poor quality laser diodes that have voids in their beam. As the distance from the jammer head to the shooter increases the size of the void(s) increase which raises the possibility of a PT at longer distances, due to the shooter being in one such void.

Additionally, as the distance increases from jammer to LIDAR, the jammer beam becomes more diffuse due to its very wide divergence, especially when compared to the much more focused beam of the LIDAR gun. At a point the LIDAR gun may interpret the jammers signal as IR noise and not as return signal.

CJR and others, if you wish to continue this discussion please open a new thread and I will move these posts there.

Brother, they are all like this. Men are from Mars, women live on planet "emotion." On that planet it can be 50 Degrees below zero one second and 120 degrees above zero the next. We retested the LI after running the sensitivity test on the test course. With the heads pointed upwards at 5 degrees and towed outward at about 2 degrees. The LI did not alert to any interferences. The LI had instant and constant punch throughs on three consecutive runs when tested with the DET Compact.

We are speculating that the cause of the punch throughs are due to the installation that we use for testing. Based on the instructions that LI provides for the firmware update, we feel that they want the heads positioned in that fashion to minimize interference between the heads. It is possible if the heads are installed so they are also recessed and isolated from each other it may result in improved performance.

Sounds like crosstalk issue on the LIs if they are chanting them out a bit. We've seen this before, but why would a firmware update cause the new or additional cross talking?

I know how difficult it can be to test. You ALL are to be commended. Few realize the time, money and effort involved to do this, yet we all benefit collectively for the efforts. A special thanks to Mirage for ALL he's done to make this happen as well.

Thanks for forgetting the dude who got things moving swiftly by being so on top of comms. ;)

It was great meeting all the new guys. You all are some cool dudes, and we hope to see you out at the next meet!

Special thanks to my fellow Raletc members who busted their asses to make this meet possible.

Thank you to everyone who attended! It was great meeting the newer guys as well as seeing old friends. Special thanks to Red Rocket, Mirage , Specifics, RIgToFly for working incredibly hard for two days straight. I know I am still tired and catching up on sleep.

Thank you to Tom, Salty and RadarRob for helping out on Sunday.

Mirage will be posting the results. Unfortunately, I will be very busy this week with work and family and don't have much free time to spend on it. We did learn a lot about the TSX and understanding 8.18. The big take away from the member testing is that choosing proper sensor locations and being meticulous with sensor alignment is very important. PTs may not happen on some LIDARs due to incorrect placement and alignment, but will show up on other LIDARs. Everyone should take the time and effort to improve their installations. Another take away from member testing is that using a lot of veil does help (fox in the hole)

I finally got the sheet of specifics testing. Early Sunday morning when everyone was at the meeting point. Specifics and I got done setting up and had some time so we tested his ride with some of the guns. I am fairly new to shooting but I am getting better every time. Specifics asked me to post the results for him. I don't think it's fair to post these as Official RALETC results as RALETC Shooters did all the Official shooting that day. I will be ready by the next meet for some real shooting. I used the tripod just like normal. I must of been doing something right as I managed a couple PT's.

I do want to make note that these results are from his car not the car he was driving all day on Sunday. He was in the Test car Sunday.

This will be done by spring for sure..... I am quite pleased with the power of this ALP system though and in a real world circumstance this gives be a better than even chance of getting woowed down in time to avoid a ticket..... Notice how I jammed the SX Sunday morning too... I'll be doing some research on pulling that bumper cover and working on the grill over the winter...

It's very hard to compare tripod shooting to what you'd see in the "wild." The tester knows the jam car is coming and concentrates on one fixed point with next to no beam shake for well over 1000'. A LEO is not sitting in his car waiting for you with baited breath in a perfectly braced position. Why? Because, it's not necessary 99% of the time to acquire a speed. Usually, even a sloppy shot gets him what he needs so, why should he be so tense and focused for a 2" putt? Even if the cop is a very experienced, proficient shooter, by the time he becomes aware he is being jammed or, not getting the speed for whatever reason, the jammer equipped car has already traveled a great distance reducing his target window substantially. Not to say this testing isn't valuable. It will show you the absolutes. It will help you fine tune your setup to maximize the precision of your return pulses.

Upon checking my front three ALP sensors when I got home, I found that they were elevated only 1-2 degrees, as best as I could tell, over true level. The rear sensors were not close to leveI and, poor results there were expected. I had recessed the front two outside sensors for a more stealth install over where they had originally been placed. After listening to BRD's recommendations, I pulled the two outside sensors back out a little bit to where they had been originally. Honestly, I don't think the emitter portions of the outside sensors were obstructed or, enclosed in anyway where they were for the test. I also don't believe one or, two degrees deviation up or, down would be the determining factor in a punch through. After seeing some of my results on test day shortly after some of the runs, I know there were several LIDARS where I was JTG. But not with the PL3 and, the Prolite where I had a couple of random punch throughs. Was it the 1 or 2 degree elevated heads or, the slightly recessed outside sensors that caused them? I don't think so. I think I have a large metallic silver, chrome beast that is very hard to cover. Every once in a while with precise, concentrated shooting, a LIDAR, will get enough pulses reflected to render a speed. I also believe that in order to be jack of all trades the ALP is not the complete master of one or two. If my install was weak I don't think I would have done so well with the TSsv where I believe I had only one sub 200' punch through or, the DE compact where I was JTG. I spent several hours yesterday fiddling with my sensors and, now have them as close to level as possible. Now it's time to get serious about cutting down on the reflective qualities of the front and rear of my Flex. I hope VG gets G5 to market soon, because that and some protective plastic covering is definitely part of my plan.

You mentioned that a 3rd head should be on the same plane as the other two. Would this mean that all dual front or all dual rear heads should also be on the same plane?
I set up my rears with the left rear slightly higher than the right to try and account for different angles between level and overpass shots. BRD thought this was fine at that time, has further testing shown this not to be the case any longer?

you are a special case with a small footprint I probably wouldn't recommend that for you. BRD and I talk about this stuff quite a bit so if he told you to do something then I would stick with it.

With respect to this test the user had a triple setup with 2 heads on the upper part of the front facia and 1 head in the lower portion of the grille. This is not optimal because you increase the risk of cross talk between the sensors.

Gotcha, I do have my tag light housing that protrudes between the rear sensors.
It wasn't so much that BRD advised me to do that, as I thought about it and asked if it was okay, just didn't want to give the impression that conflicting advice had been given.

Thanks for the reply.

Not obsessing, just noticed the sensors on the same plane mentioned in Mirage's write up. I was JTG & JFG with single F & R sensors before with Ga Speed shooting so I'm expecting the quad setup should still be good but haven't had an opportunity to test against vpr yet and at the speeds I like to travel...maybe I do obsess a little ;)

Helmet & jackets are black with no reflective material and all bike reflectors removed btw.

Your install on your bike is perfect. Mirage was referring to a truck install where the center sensor was mounted over 1 1/2 feet lower than the other two sensors near the headlights.
